A guest post from Andrew – Lots of fails today

Janae is gone for two days and I volunteered to give it a go for the blog for today. Due to the nature of both jobs, we spend a lot of time together, so any time one of us is gone, it feels weird! We also both parent VERY differently, so when Janae was getting ready to leave, she said, “Have fun cleaning the hour right before I get home.” I am a huge procrastinator, and she is not. If she knows something needs to be done or has a due date, it’s done a week ahead of time; mine is done an hour before, if I’m lucky. As I write this, I should probably be working on my thesis, which is due in March, and I have A TON of work to do. I don’t tell Janae these things because she will start having stress by proxy.

So I had no worries going into solo-parent time. I have done it before, and it’s not my first rodeo. I had a field trip with Beck and Skye for the first half of the day at the aquarium and conservation center. Everything started out great, but there was a bad omen. I had been working on some sourdough and going to through the process and after I let it rise I found this:

Epic fail number 1. A lot of work for sourdough, for crust dough. I’m starting to think buying sourdough from Costco or Harmons is much better for my soul and sanity. Oh well, moving on, we went to the aquarium for a school-sponsored field trip, and it was so fun. Skye and Beck were in heaven together, around all the animals and their friends. All the penguins would swim right up to the glass next to Beck, he loved it!

It was fun to be a chaperone for a group of kids and see how much excitement and fun they have in the little things. I had a small group of 5 kids, but I was stressed about making sure no one fell into an exhibit full of poisonous frogs or sharks. Post field trip we had to go on a little date to our favorite place ever – IN-N-OUT!!!

We just happened to need gas on the way home and what better place is there but a Maverik next to one of my favorite bike shops.

I know I make Janae nervous and sweat for a lot of things. I am basically a 14-year-old boy with an adult job and a body that feels like 60 with all the breaks and hardware I have already. But I texted Janae right before she was to take off, “I’m going to apologize now for the things I do and may buy while you are are gone!” Then I sent her this picture.

Should I make life interesting and make it new bike day while Janae is gone?

Epic fail #2, Janae hasn’t even been gone 12 hours and our laundry room is a disaster. I don’t know how this happens so quickly and we really haven’t been home that much today.

Knox came home today!! We were stoked to have him, and he jumped right into some of my house projects that have been on the back burner. But it also led to fail number #3.

No he didn’t get electrocuted. This was fail #3:

Of course, I forgot the orthodontist appointment that I had written down on my planner yesterday, and I think I was reminded about it 4-6 times by Janae. I forgot his appointment in my grand plans to fix up the house, and I was 30 minutes late, so we got to reschedule his appointment.

We went to the BYU creamery again today. They have been throwing a party there for the last three days for the grand opening. They have been giving away free burgers, ice cream, soda, chips and prizes every single night. Free food and treats, we are always there!! We got there ten minutes before it started and the line went out the door and across the street. We got some free ice cream and barely escaped.

Cougar paws ice cream for the win. Free just tastes so much better!!

The house might be a little messier and we missed some appointments, but everyone was still smiling and no tears at the end of the night.

Post-walk holding

Send all the good vibes and thoughts for tomorrow! Lets see if we can stay out of trouble and out of the hospital.

Questions:

  • Do you have any funny stories from your childhood, when only one parent was in charge? (One time my mom went to a conference for work and my dad was in charge, my brothers and I thought it was a good idea to get a dog and we managed to hide her for over a week. We kept the dog, she was a chocolate lab and she lived to 16+ years)
  • What is your go-to comfort food right now?
  • What burning questions do you have for me right now?
